[Untitled] Thinking About Sahir Ludhianvi « Kafila: In Sahir, I find a poet, who has the poetic conscience to engage with the ‘real world’……sahir was writing at a time when the euphoria of a new nation was glossing over the harsher realities…there were only some lyricists during his times, who wished to look beyond the romanticised image of the great Indian nation, the perfect heterosexual romance, the desired female body, or the overt sense of patriotism. To be able to construct a poetic narrative of the challenges of the times was an arduous task…..to articulate the failures of the Nehruvian vision was difficult….or rather to put it simply…to put in words the myriad emotions of human life and relationships was not easy…At a time when idealism was rampant…to be able to state the obvious, that too so beatifully…and yet retain the idealism tells us much about his poetic abilities…..I have always found a rupture between Sahir’s life and his poetry and am not too sure his personal…was also his political or poetical if u please……He was an arrogant man….probably even a mysoginist…even an egotist whose concern was to be better than others…to stand out……He did have feudalistic tendencies expressed in his interactions…even with his best friends…..He wasn’t a feminist perhaps…and in real life didnt think much of women…..But to be able to then….even articulate the voices of the ’subaltern’…including women…was a phenomenal job that only a born poet could achieve…If only in terms of how he managed to express things….his literary skills were unsurpassed….he was truly the ‘magician’…..of words!!!!At a time when we are all worried about who can speak for whom….and who can represent whom……I am convinced of his abilities to represent the secular, the feminists, the post modern, the idealists, the realists….and many more…and therein lies his greatness….

Bollywood and the Oscars - Sepia Mutiny: They also enjoy all the "exportable" movies like Deepa Mehta/Mira Nair stuff, condescendingly commenting about arranged marriages, poverty or the condition of women. On the other end, they quickly get bored in front of light/entertaining movies set in a modern, urban setting (recently i've shown them mixed doubles, Taxi N.9211...) - as soon as it looks too close to hollywood stuff, they start commenting on the product values, plot holes, and it ends up in "I don't see the point of watching such movies, they are american, british, german or french movies with similar plots and situations, the fact that it is shot in india doesn't bring anything new to the genre, etc".

[Untitled] O.P.Nayyar”¦Not forgotten « Sachiniti: lata’s first film as plaback singer was ‘aap ki sewa mein (1947)’…the very first song she recorded was a thumri ‘paa lagoon kar jori re shyam na khelo mo se hori’, penned by late mahipal (navrang fame) who was not only an actor but also a very good poet…this song was picturised on Rohini Bhate n the music director was Datta Dawjekar. in other words v cn say that today’s lata was introduced to the hindi cinema OR given first chance by DD only who gave music in 2 more hindi films (adalat/1948 n golkunda ka qaidi/1954)…anuradha poudwal was also introduced by DD n the film was a marathi one, ‘yashoda (1974)’n the song was ‘ghumla hridayi ninaad ha’…we r fortunate that 90 years old DD is still in good health n is residing in 4 bunglows area….
