[Gaurav Srivastava] Compilations of authors like Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay would be a treat to read. Hats off to the director and Vidhu Vinod Chopra for giving life to SCC's Parineeta. Saif is getting better day by day. Sanjay Dutt too was good as Girish Babu but the show-stealer was the newcomer - Vidya Balan. She has done a marvellous job.

[Meticulously Underthought - A Malfunctionable Act] Sanjay Dutt looked unbearably bad and half the time I was expecting him to go "Circuit, kutch kar na!" I am still at a loss for trying to understand what exactly was Dia Mirza trying to do in the little time she did get to grace the screen and for heaven's sake, why in the world did we need so many songs? The exceptions were Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan who were outstanding in their performances, but even they shared no on-screen chemistry, which would have made it a bit more bearable.

Memories from childhood

[Inspired to blog] Anyway, I was SO caught up in the plot that during a fight scene, when it looked like my hero was getting the worst of it from the villain, I distinctly remember jumping up from my seat in a state of serious excitement (and anxiety for Rajesh Khanna's fate) and yelling "Hit him Rajesh Khanna, HIT HIM" at the top of my voice. Much to the embarrassment of my slightly older friend who pulled me back down and hissed "Shut up, it is not real!" But it was to me.

Tollywood

[Keywords] Perhaps it’s worth mentioning here that ”˜Tollywood’, as a name for the Calcutta film industry was in circulation long before anyone had ever heard of Bollywood. The term is a portmanteau, Hollywood and Tollygunge (the area in Calcutta where many film studios were located) packed up into one word. JS magazine used it liberally in the late 60s and early 70s, so it isn’t unlikely that someone thought up ”˜Bollywood’ as a variation on the joke about the same time. Madhava Prasad digs even further, and traces the origin of Tollywood to an American engineer who introduced talkies to India in 1932...
